Norwegian WW2 War Medal, 1939-45
This medal awarded to a Norwegian merchant marine sailor during WW2 has gone missing whilst in the NZ Post system. The letter packet was scanned by NZ Post in Auckland in February 2023 however it failed to reach the intended family in Gore, Southland.
The Norwegian War Medal was instituted on 23 May 1941. It was awarded to Norwegian and foreign members of the military who in a meritorious way have participated in the Second World War for Norway. The War Medal was also awarded posthumously to all Norwegians and foreigners who fought in the Norwegian forces, merchant marine, and fell for the Norwegian Resistance.
Distribution ceased in 1951, but in 1979 it was determined by Royal decree that this medal was to be awarded to Norwegian and foreign seamen who served on Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission (Nortraship) vessels during World War II for 18 months, or on board Royal Norwegian Navy vessels. From Dec 1979 – Dec 1987 the medal has been given to 10,755 people including the descendants of deceased recipients.
The bronze medal, boxed as shown in the photograph, holds special significance for the family who would be very grateful for its return. A reward is offered.
