Families, Descendants and Veterans are searching for  LOST, MISSING or STOLEN war & military service medals …

As we commemorate the anniversary of the four years of the 20th Century that was World War 1, once referred to as “The Great War” and/or the “War to End all Wars” (it was neither ‘great nor did it ‘end’ wars), we acknowledge the disastrous slaughter of a generation of New Zealand’s young fighting men and women.  During this time the descendants of military Veterans everywhere have been and will be sharply reminded of the great sacrifices their deceased family members have made.  Sadly, over the years following WW1 and beyond, many war medals that were once worn by the Veteran, or had been sent to grief stricken families of the dead, have disappeared from the custody of those families for a variety of reasons.  Lost, pawned, sold (often in desperate circumstances), swapped or traded, gifted away, stolen or even deliberately destroyed however, fortunately many have survived or been saved. It is these medals that offer descendants an opportunity to re-connect and re-ignite the flames of gratitude, memorial and honour.

Descendant families world-wide are seeking to re-connect with both their known, and unknown, ancestor Veterans and recovering LOST or MISSING family war medals is an important element of this quest.  Recovering family medals is a very tangible way of reminding younger generations of the price that has been paid for going to war.  Wearing the medals of ancestors can also help to foster the collective responsibility of descendants to preserve and honour traditions of respectful acknowledgment of the service and sacrifices of our military ancestors.

If you have found medals named to any of the veterans listed below, please consider contacting Medals Reunited NZ who can help you to reunite medals with veterans (if living), or a surviving family or descendant.

Medal Collectors and Traders …

Medals Reunited NZ has no interest in buying, collecting or otherwise trading in medals.  Our primary focus is wholly on reuniting New Zealanders lost medals that have been found (or pre-owned) and sent to us to locate a veteran’s family or descendants to reunite the medals with.  The majority of the medals we handle are those that were issued  in their hundreds of thousands, such as  the medals issued for service during WW1 (which were named) and WW2 (not named).

Medals Reunited NZ acknowledges the absolute right of traders, collectors and individuals to engage in the collection and trade in military medals.  Numerous war and service medals have been disposed of over the decades, sometimes by veterans themselves or by their family members for a variety of reasons.  Were it not for the conscientious preservation and guardianship of these medals by the medal collector community, many thousands of New Zealanders war and service medals, including some rare and prestigious medals  important to New Zealand’s military and social history, would have been lost forever.

Advice to families re: missing medals found …

If you see or know of medals that you believe may have belonged (or belong?) to your family and you would like to recover it, and if that medal is now in the hands of another person or organisation, I urge you to proceed with caution.  Bear in mind that medal collectors and/or traders have often acquired medals over a long period of time and at considerable personal expense.  Apart from the initial purchase they may have incurred other additional expenses for medal repairs, restoration, re-ribboning, mounting and so on.  Therefore any overtures you might make toward the holder of a medal that you, as a family member or descendant, believe should be yours as a matter of historical right, will likely fall on deaf ears.

Most professional collectors and traders have sound, evidence-based proof of their legal acquisition and therefore entitlement to ownership.  You should also ponder the possibilities that your family’s medals may have been deliberately sold, traded, given away  many years prior, either by the veteran whilst alive, by another family member, or by any number of other owners since your relative or ancestor last owned them.  Find out the facts first – ask how the owner of the medals how they were acquired and then perhaps see if a possible return or sale to you is negotiable.  If on the other hand you believe your family’s medals now in the possession of someone else have been STOLEN, your best course of action is to seek advice from, and lodge a formal complaint with, the New Zealand Police and let them unravel the questions of acquisition and legal ownership.

‘First Right of Refusal’ …

In the interests of encouraging descendant families to reconnect with the memory of their war veteran ancestors, MRNZ respectfully requests collectors and traders who are considering offering any of their medals for sale, auction or trade, or who are approached by a veteran’s family seeking to acquire the medals for their family, to please consider permitting the family or descendant the ‘first right of refusal’ to recover their heirlooms.

REWARDS offered for medals …

In addition to any price that may be negotiated with family to buy back medals from current owners, some of the families of the veterans listed below have offered a REWARD for the successful return of their family’s heirlooms.  Current medal owners can contact MRNZ for further information.

MRNZ has received written requests for missing medals from proven* family descendants of the following Veteran’s  … can you help us trace these medals ?

* MRNZ requires documentary & photographic proof of all claimant’s identity & ancestry before medals or ephemera are returned.
